Dentists understand that dental procedures or even themselves can be unsettling for some patients. Despite the advancements in dental care, many people still feel uncomfortable with the idea of scheduling dental visits. What most patients don’t know is, there are now methods to make procedures as painless and comfortable as possible. No, we don’t mean the use of anesthetics that can still be quite troubling to some patients due to the use of needles; we at Rock Point Family Dentistry utilize sedation dentistry.
Sedation dentistry, sometimes referred to as sleep dentistry, uses medications during dental appointments to help patients relax. There are several types of sedation, but our practice chose to offer laughing gas.
Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, is a type of gas that emits a slightly sweet taste and odor. During dental procedures, the said gas is mixed with oxygen and is delivered through a mask worn over the patient’s nose. A few minutes after it is inhaled, a person who was initially scared would then feel more relaxed and calm. Despite this experience, they would still be able to breathe on their own, move their limbs, and even respond to the dentist. After the procedure, the mask can simply be removed to let the effects of laughing gas disappear.
Is Laughing Gas Safe?
The recreational use of laughing gas due to its euphoric effects can be harmful. But, if it is used under the expertise of a dentist, patients can be sure of its safety. With their assistance, the oxygen supply to the brain can be secured while preventing the effects of hypoxia.
Laughing gas is non-allergic and non-addictive; however, ten percent of patients may experience nausea. It is also not recommended for people who have medical conditions like a chronic pulmonary disease. Since every patient is different, it is best first to consult a dentist so that they can assess the qualification of a particular person.
